The famous Clare Island lighthouse is currently looking for a buyer! Up for sale for the modest sum of 4.8 million euros, this historic building is an exceptional property, facing the ocean, and especially Clew Bay and Keem Bay on Achill Island.
The origins of the Clare Island lighthouse date back to 1806, when the Marquis of Sligo decided to build a beacon for approaching ships. Sadly, the building fell victim to a terrible fire in 1816, following a candle extinction. The lighthouse was totally destroyed, and finally rebuilt in 1818.
This marked the beginning of a long period of operation, with the Clare Island lighthouse illuminating the waters for over 150 years…
Until September 29, 1965, when its beam was definitively extinguished: its light was deemed insufficient to pierce the thick blankets of fog at certain times of the year.
The lighthouse was then bought privately by a number of owners: the Timmerman family, who transformed the site into a guest house, Lady Georgina Forbes, and a wealthy German buyer.

The lighthouse was then extensively renovated. From its outbuildings and janitor’s houses to the lighthouse itself, the buildings have been restored in keeping with their history, and the furniture and interior design have been completely redesigned.
The whole layout is designed to offer an optimal experience: you’ll feel right at home. Everything exudes comfort and simplicity. A lighthouse that has lost none of its soul, but has been modernized to appeal to potential ocean lovers!
The result is an attractive, cosy lighthouse where you can spend a night or two with a book in hand, a blanket on your lap and the sound of the waves roaring in your ears.
