Visitors will not be able to visit Skellig Michael Island before 2021. This disappointing news is once again a consequence of the ongoing coronavirus health crisis. The Irish Office of Public Works (OPW) has confirmed that the site cannot reopen until it is secured and adapted to new social distancing requirements.

Skellig Michael on Hold… Until 2021

All Visits Suspended Until Safety Measures Are in Place

Another popular tourist site closed to visitors. Indeed, COVID-19 has put some of Ireland’s most sought-after attractions on pause.

To recap, Skellig Michael is a wild island located off the coast of County Kerry, Ireland. Inhabited by monks since the 7th century, the site boasts incredible remains, including a staircase of 618 steps carved directly into the rock, as well as an exceptional monastery.

Already a UNESCO World Heritage site, the island gained renewed attention as a filming location for the latest Star Wars trilogy.

Unfortunately, the island has been closed to visitors since May 15 due to the COVID-19 pandemic affecting Ireland and the rest of the world.

According to OPW Heritage Commissioner John McMahon, the island will not reopen before 2021. There are significant challenges in ensuring safe visits for both staff and visitors under COVID-19 restrictions.

Unfortunately, we must confirm that Skellig Michael will remain closed for the rest of the 2020 season, with reopening planned for 2021.

Approximately 13,000 people visit this renowned island each year. During summer, boats carrying up to 12 passengers sail to the island, allowing visitors to explore Skellig Michael, climb its staircase, and discover its monastery. A unique place… sadly deserted by tourists this year.

So, travelers will have to wait until 2021 to explore the wonders of this wild Irish island!
