Irish nationalists

From the 17th century onwards, Ireland saw the emergence of Irish nationalists and new intellectuals, believing in the idea of an autonomous, independent Irish nation, free from the British presence. From this period until the 19th century, nationalist sentiment united the Irish through perilous struggles.
