Irish beers

The reputation of Irish beers is well established. Most of them are known worldwide. While the Irish have a solid reputation as drinkers, beer is a drink celebrated in every pub in Ireland. Red, dark, or pale, served on draught, in a bottle, or in a can, Irish beer is the ultimate drink of reference. Led by the famous Guinness beer, Ireland has found fans of Irish beer all over the world.

Centuries of know-how, devoted to beers with character!

Ancient origins

Beer in Ireland dates back to prehistoric times. Archaeological remains suggest that the island’s first inhabitants were already brewing fermented drinks from barley and other grains. The techniques were rudimentary, but the essence of beer was already there.

Monastic influence

During the Middle Ages, monks took over. In their monasteries, they brewed beer not only for personal consumption but also as a form of hospitality for travellers. The monks also helped improve brewing techniques, making beer tastier and safer to drink than the often-contaminated water of the time.

The rise of breweries

From the 17th century onwards, with urbanisation and industrialisation, breweries began to emerge as commercial enterprises. This was the period when names such as Arthur Guinness appeared. Founded in 1759, the Guinness brewery in Dublin became synonymous with Irish stout and is now a global icon.

The impact of legislation

During the 19th and early 20th centuries, various laws were passed that affected beer production and consumption in Ireland. For example, the 1902 licensing law reduced the number of pubs, leading to market concentration and making it more difficult for small breweries to compete with larger ones.

The craft revival

From the 1990s and especially in the 21st century, Ireland experienced a craft beer revival. New microbreweries emerged, experimenting with a variety of styles and flavours. Beers such as IPAs, craft lagers, and even sour ales enriched the Irish brewing landscape.

The present and the future

Today, Ireland is a fascinating blend of tradition and innovation when it comes to beer. World-famous brands such as Guinness coexist with innovative local microbreweries. The country has also become a prime destination for beer lovers, with festivals, tastings, and brewery tours celebrating its rich brewing history.
