The magnificent Keem beach on Achill Island has just been named the best wild swimming spot in the UK and Ireland. A recent study by reusable bottle company Ocean Bott le analyzed water samples from over 800 waterways to determine the safety of various swimming beaches. They then cross-referenced visitors’ experiences to come up with a score… And the result is clear: Keem beach on Achill Island (Co. Mayo) is the safest and most beautiful beach in Ireland and the UK!
It’s not the first time Keem beach has been praised for its beauty and cleanliness. Numerous positive reviews from tourist guides and other water monitoring bodies have praised the incredible qualities of Keem beach!
And you only have to take a tour to understand that! The beach seems lost at the end of the world, far from civilization. Its sandy beach contrasts beautifully with the turquoise waters and lush greenery of the surrounding countryside!
But Ocean Bottle also decided to look at the quality of the beach’s bathing water, tracking all forms of pollution, including the number of E. coli and intestinal enterococci…
The company also cross-referenced each location’s Google rating to rank the best places for wild swimming based on visitor experiences.
And that’s where Keem beach comes into its own! The latter scored 20 for water cleanliness, like all the other places in the top 20, but its 1,683 positive reviews earned it an average score of 4.9: enough to propel it to the top of the podium!
Achill Island beach has been awarded the Blue Flag for its ultra-clean waters, making it one of Ireland’s most beautiful beaches.
Barafundle Bay in Pembrokeshire, Wales, and Mwnt Beach in Ceredigion, Wales, take second and third place respectively, with cleanliness scores of 20 and average scores of 4.9, but with fewer overall reviews.
Other Irish sites in the top twenty include Trailer an Dóilín in Galway (6th), Dooey Beach in Donegal (9th), Curracloe Beach in Wexford (12th), Dog’s Bay in Galway (13th) and Enniscrone Beach in Sligo (14th).
