To mark National Heritage Week 2026, Kylemore Abbey will introduce a new interactive trail offering a behind-the-scenes look at its conservation work. From 15 to 23 August, visitors will be able to explore the renowned Connemara estate while discovering the professions, techniques and projects that help preserve its heritage.
Called the Kylemore Abbey Heritage Trail, this free family experience will take the form of a self-guided route through the estate. It ties in with this year’s national theme, Heritage at Risk, which focuses on monuments, landscapes and traditions that are under threat or require particular attention.

QR codes offer a behind-the-scenes look at conservation
The trail will lead visitors through Kylemore Abbey’s main areas: the castle, the walled Victorian garden, the historic buildings, the woodland and the estate’s natural landscapes.
QR codes placed at various points along the route will provide access to videos made with members of the Kylemore team. Gardeners, craftspeople, architects and conservation specialists will discuss their day-to-day work and the challenges involved in maintaining a historic estate of this scale.
The aim is to show that preserving Kylemore is about more than its architecture alone. The trail will explore three complementary dimensions: built heritage, natural heritage and the cultural traditions still alive on the estate.

A self-guided route with challenges and discoveries along the way
Designed for all ages, the Heritage Trail can be completed freely, with no set start time. Participants will be invited to collect stickers at each stage, an approach designed to hold younger visitors’ attention while allowing each family to explore at its own pace.
The experience will offer a different perspective on Kylemore Abbey’s best-known spaces. Behind the neo-Gothic façades, impeccably maintained flowerbeds and woodland paths lies ongoing work in restoration, maintenance and biodiversity protection.
Heritage preservation at the heart of Heritage Week

The interactive trail will run from Saturday 15 to Sunday 23 August 2026. It will be available during the estate’s usual opening hours, with access included in the Kylemore Abbey admission ticket.
Alongside the trail, the site has announced exhibitions, talks, demonstrations, storytelling sessions and events centred on traditional music. One presentation will focus on the topographical surveys of Kylemore’s former Victorian model farm, which is currently the subject of a long-term conservation project.
This programme gives travellers another reason to visit Kylemore Abbey during the second half of August. It turns one of Connemara’s most photographed attractions into a genuine opportunity to explore the methods used to pass Ireland’s heritage on to future generations.
