It’s not always easy to choose the right luggage for your trip to Ireland! There are thousands to choose from: large, small, flexible, rigid, in ABS shell, on wheels, without wheels… So much so that you soon find yourself lost… Don’t panic, here’s what you need to know to find the right luggage for you!

Find the right luggage for you: identify your needs

Focus on functionality and sturdiness

When it comes to luggage, there are several schools of thought. Some people prefer to travel compact, while others need to take as much as possible with them.

Generally speaking, there are 3 types of luggage:

  • backpacks
  • the soft bag (sometimes semi-rigid)
  • the rigid suitcase

The backpack

Backpackers will generally prefer the first option: the advantage of a backpack is that it takes up very little space, is easy to carry and provides easy access to your belongings.

Choose bags with multiple compartments: these have been designed to meet the needs of travelers. Space for your papers (sometimes hidden in a pocket on the back), your computer, your water bottle, your map, your clothes… With a little optimization, you can fit anything in… as long as you like to do without the superfluous!

On the downside, the backpack can sometimes weigh down your shoulders (hence the need for comfortable foam straps). This bag must also be of a size compatible with airline requirements to be taken in the cabin with you.

The soft bag (sometimes semi-rigid)

For those who like to travel a little heavier, there’s the “soft” (or semi-rigid) bag option. It has the advantage of being able to hold more stuff and, above all, of being able to cheat on its space (a soft bag can be slightly deformed if you need to fit more stuff in. Something a rigid suitcase won’t do). Most of these bags can be fitted with a “clamshell” bottom, with wheels: an additional advantage to protect the base of the luggage.

However, there are a few drawbacks to this type of luggage: firstly, in terms of protecting your belongings. These are potentially exposed to shocks (at least on the top). What’s more, there’s nothing to protect you from a zipper breaking or the fabric tearing. Although sturdy, it can be put to the test during transport.

Finally, you’ll need a padlock to prevent your bag from being opened without your knowledge.

The rigid suitcase

Then there’s the case of the rigid suitcase. It has many advantages: it protects your belongings perfectly, and lets you travel with as many items as possible. Often equipped with wheels and a rolling handle, they save you from having to break your back to get around. And the icing on the cake: some even come with built-in code locks to prevent theft of your personal belongings.

The only drawback: the rigid suitcase won’t let you pack more than you’d like. It’s hard to force: the rigid case is designed to hold only the volume you’ve defined. You may be able to force yourself to sit on it, but this is not recommended and the space saving will be minimal.

Generally speaking, a rigid suitcase is more expensive. But it’s also more qualitative.

Our opinion

The perfect combo: backpack and hard case

At Guide-Irlande.com, we believe in versatility. There’s no such thing as the perfect piece of luggage: but there are plenty that will suit your needs and your way of traveling.

For us, the ideal combination for a trip to Ireland is the “backpack – hard case” combination. This allows you to combine a traditional, safe and solid piece of luggage with an accessible bag, where your most essential items can be stored on your back.

Price-wise, there’s something for everyone. For all styles too. So don’t hesitate to consult baggage handlers who will be able to advise you according to your needs.

Among them, we would like to list a few addresses:

Then all you have to do is find the right luggage for you! Don’t forget that it can also be used for many other trips, whether to Ireland or elsewhere (check out this blog on the subject). The world is vast and overflowing with possibilities: you might as well opt for a sustainable choice that allows you to discover the planet with the same baggage!
