While a Dublin to Nantes flight usually takes less than two hours, a Ryanair plane experienced quite an unexpected journey on Thursday, December 22nd. After taking off from Dublin, the pilot was unable to land at Nantes airport due to weather conditions deemed too dangerous. This forced the plane to divert to Marseille, then attempt to land at Nantes again — unsuccessfully! After more than 7 hours in the air, the plane finally headed back to Dublin, leaving passengers in a rather unusual situation.
When Fog Makes Landing Too Risky
The Pilot Tried Twice to Land at Nantes Airport Before Returning to Dublin!
Sometimes, things just don’t go as planned! This was certainly the case for the Ryanair pilot who expected a smooth landing at Nantes airport. Unfortunately for him and the passengers, the weather had other ideas.
The plane, departing from Dublin, followed a surprising route: first heading to Nantes, then being diverted to Tours, then Marseille, before being redirected back to Nantes — and ultimately landing back in Dublin, its original departure point!
In the end, passengers were understandably tense and exhausted when they finally touched down in Ireland after over 7 hours of flying. Despite their frustration, they showed understanding and kindness toward the pilot, recognizing that landing in Nantes under such dense fog would have posed a real safety risk.
They were welcomed by Dublin airport services and accommodated in a hotel for the night — and they tried their luck again the next day!
