Conditions for exploring Ireland by bike…

Essential equipment

Travelling in Ireland requires not only good physical condition, but also careful attention to the equipment you take with you. Starting with the bike, which has to be reliable and in excellent condition.

Of course, a good mountain bike is preferable to a city bike, as city bikes can be adapted to any type of road you’ll be riding (the bad reputation of Irish roads is well known)… It’s also possible to rent a bike on site, or to bring your own bike with you, for a higher price than your plane ticket (the same goes for the ferry)…

When it comes to equipment, it’s equally important to be able to cope with all possible and unimaginable situations (flat tires, broken derailleur chain, falls, bad weather… etc.).

We also recommend that you pack your backpack with everything you need to deal with any breakages, so that you can repair your bike in no time at all and set off again on the Irish roads. Here is a checklist of the basic equipment you need:

Tools

  • tools such as :
    • allen keys
    • a tire changer
    • screwdrivers suitable for your ATV
    • chain remover (with links)
    • a spoke wrench
  • derailleur cable
  • an inner tube
  • an anti-theft device
  • spare bulbs for your ATV’s front and rear lights
  • bags to store your cards and papers

Miscellaneous equipment

  • suitable clothing such as :
    • warm clothing (sweaters, jackets, etc.)
    • a windbreaker (against wind and rain)
    • a pair of waterproof gloves
    • a cap
    • thick socks
    • lighter clothing (for hot weather)
  • a large, comfortable backpack
  • sunscreen
  • sunglasses
  • a water bottle
  • a first-aid kit
  • a working cell phone in Ireland in case of emergency

Prefer spring and summer!

As mentioned above, the weather in Ireland is particularly changeable, and it’s possible to experience all 4 seasons of the year in a single day… You might as well do everything you can to minimize the risk of bad weather! That’s why we recommend you take to the Irish roads between May and September.

The weather here is much milder, and will surely spare you the inconvenience of a stay spent pedaling in the rain! What’s more, you’ll be able to discover the Irish countryside in the best possible conditions!
