Castledermot

Castledermot is a small Irish village in County Kildare, less than 80km southwest of Dublin and 10km from the town of Carlow. A colorful and dynamic village, Castledermot boasts a number of tourist attractions worth a visit, including a 12th-century castle and the remains of an ancient Franciscan monastery…

History of Castledermot

A politicized town since the 12th century

Castledermot is the town where the first known Parliament of Ireland met on June 18, 1264. The village has suffered many setbacks in Irish history, such as the Great Famine (1845-1848), which decimated much of the population at the time.

Today, Castledermot is an expanding town, with a rapidly growing population thanks to its economic development and proximity to major cities.
