Killary Fjord

Killary Harbour is a fjord in County Galway, north of Clifden. Ireland’s only fjord, Killary Harbour is an impressive 16km long and 45m wide. The beauty of the landscape is fascinating: the clear water contrasts sharply with the black, rugged mountains of Galway.

Visit Killary Harbour

Leenane: a small village nestled against Killary Harbour

Out of nowhere lies Leenane, a small, isolated village lost in this immense landscape of land and water. Surrounded by the Patry Mountains, the Maumturk Mountains and the Mweelrea Mountains, the village lies at the far end of the fjord.

If you want to stop here, you can count on the presence of a few Pubs, as well as a shop, a post office, and a few dwellings (which are very few in number).

The village’s small size and remote location make it a place where you’ll find few distractions… apart from contemplating the landscape, of course.

However, it’s also very pleasant to take refuge in one of their pubs, and enjoy the peace and quiet: the locals are naturally friendly (as they are all over Ireland), and it’s fair to say that a little peace and quiet can only be a good thing!

Killary Walk

This hiking trail follows the fjord along signposted paths, offering breathtaking views of Killary Harbour. With a duration of 4 hours and a medium level of difficulty, this is a pleasant walk. Don’t forget to bring your camera: the views are breathtaking and worthy of movie landscapes!

Visit the fjord by boat

Killary Cruises offers tours of around 1h20, exploring the fjord by sea… Needless to say, it’s a pleasant walk, with incredible views of the bay and its imposing mountains… Make sure you bring a good sweater along for the ride: it’s pretty windy, especially at sea…

Aasleagh Falls

Follow the R335 towards Delphi: you’ll come across a succession of waterfalls well worth the detour.
