Shankill (Seanchill, in Irish) is a small village on the outskirts of Dublin. Considered a chic suburb, Shankill is also a tourist destination, with numerous archaeological sites (stone circles, ruined castles, etc.). A nice little village, attractive in many ways!

In the Middle Ages, Shankill grew under the rule of the Lawless family, a powerful family with control over a large part of the region… Several castles were built here between 1400 and 1600: Shankill Castle and Shanganagh Castle, as well as a fortified house called Puck’s Castle.
Around 1500, a new family reigned over Shankill: the Walsh family, a wealthy clan, set about reinforcing the town’s defensive structures. Unfortunately for the family, the land was expropriated by the English in the 17th century, forcing its inhabitants to abandon their homes…
After a few tumultuous years, deeply marked by the Anglo-Irish conflict, the Lawless family finally regained possession of Shankill until 1795, after which Sir William Domvile became the town’s new master. The latter profoundly changed the face of the village, giving it a typically Georgian architecture. Shankill soon expanded, attracting wealthy Dubliners looking to settle outside the Irish capital. Sumptuous villas were built, and Shankill’s influence grew from strength to strength…
