Armagh Friary is one of the many abbeys dotted around Northern Ireland. Nevertheless, it’s one of the most beautiful in County Armagh and well worth a visit, especially if you love Irish medieval architecture!

Visit Armagh Friary

A 13th-century Franciscan convent

The Armagh convent was founded by Franciscan archbishop Patrick O ‘Scannail between 1263 and 1264. It welcomed many ecclesiastics in search of contemplation and seclusion. They devoted their time to prayer, the Christian arts and the convent’s logistical needs.

The building remained in operation until 1600, when it was severely damaged by the geo-political context of the time. It was then abandoned until the present day.

The monastery is the longest in Ireland. In fact, despite its current state, the latter’s dimensions are quite impressive. The visit is free and well worth the detour. Some of the architectural subtleties are delightful, and many of the arches have stood the test of time…
