Navan Fort (also known as Emain Macha) is an archaeological site, resembling a large grassy hill… But don’t be fooled by appearances: this hill is actually a building, once considered the capital of the kings of Ulster!

A cairn founded in 300 B.C.

Navan Fort is said to have been built by Queen Macha around 300 B.C. It is a cairn on which a wooden edifice was erected, where the great kings of Ulster once met. A veritable capital at the time, its influence came to an end following a fire, to the benefit of the hill of Tara.

The site includes a Visitor Center. Here you can discover the complete history of the hill, and admire objects discovered on site. Among the many curiosities is the presence of the skull of a magot, an African monkey, demonstrating that the population of the time was already trading with more distant countries…
