Coole Park is a nature reserve where nature extends over several hectares. The Irish are accustomed to strolling here at weekends, whether for a leisurely stroll or a more challenging hike. The wild landscapes, criss-crossed by rivers and forests, are simply breathtakingly beautiful!
Coole Park was originally owned by Lady Gregory, an artist with a particular love of literature and the art of theater. She co-founded the Abbey Theatre with many great artists, including the great William Butler Yeats.
During Lady Gregory’s lifetime, many artists came to stroll in the park. A tree called the “Autograph Tree” features the engraved initials of many of Ireland’s literary celebrities. You’ll see the signatures of Sean O’Case, George Bernard Shaw and Yeats himself.
On Lady Gregory’s death, Coole Park was taken over by the Irish state, and has been maintained on a weekly basis ever since, allowing visitors to discover the wonders of Irish nature without worry.
The park starts with a Visitor Centre, where you’ll discover an exhibition dedicated to the park’s history and its flora and fauna. Indeed, the area is renowned for being home to some of the rarest natural species on the planet, which you can admire as you stroll along.
There are several trails running through Coole Park, and it’s up to you to choose which direction to go.
Don’t miss the Seven Woods, the superb forest that directly inspired William Butler Yeats to write some of his poetry. This wood is crossed by a river, a lake and a beautiful pond. Don’t hesitate to stop for a picnic. This is definitely one of the most beautiful spots in Coole Park!
