Considered Ireland’s oldest hospital, it remains a place of interest for tourists thanks to its typically Georgian architecture. Don’t hesitate to discover its façade and inner courtyard!

History of Dr Steevens’ Hospital

Ireland’s oldest hospital!

Built in 1719 and inaugurated in 1733, the Dr Steevens’ Hospital owes its existence to the generosity of Dr Steevens and her brother, two benefactors who bequeathed a substantial sum for its creation.

Ahead of its time, the hospital’s architecture was designed to maximize natural light and ventilation. Choices that reflect the medical knowledge of the time.

Originally designed to care for Dublin’s poorest, the hospital quickly gained a reputation for playing an important role in Ireland’s medical history.

Over the centuries, hospitals have had to adapt to numerous medical and social changes. It has survived periods of great poverty, epidemic disease and changes in medical practice.

Despite these challenges, it has remained a leading care facility in Dublin.

It was even one of the first hospitals in Dublin to introduce clinical teaching, where medical students learned directly from patients. The hospital has been a center of innovation and training for many generations of Irish doctors.

Preserved Georgian architecture

The building, with its classical façade and clean lines, is a striking example of Georgian architecture in Dublin.

It’s easily recognizable with its yellow and gray facade, symmetrical pediment and multiple windows. It is still considered a masterpiece of architecture for its time.

Even today, it continues to impress visitors with its elegance and historic character. You can admire the outside of the building, but please note that the inside is reserved for hospital patients and families.

The inner courtyard, strangely reminiscent of a cloister, is a must-see. Don’t miss the clock tower, typical of the period.
