Dromoland Castle is one of County Clare’s treasures. Located near Newmarket-on-Fergus, it has now become a luxury hotel, offering a golf course, restaurant and first-class accommodation. With its 5 stars, it is a clever blend of history and modernity, even if the château as it stands today is rather recent.

History of the castle

It all began in 1014, when Donough O’Brien, a son of Brian Boru, controlled the Dromoland region from a defensive castle: Dromoland Castle. At that time, the building had nothing in common with today’s château. It’s more of a fortified tower, closely resembling the architecture of Bunratty Castle in County Limerick.

The influential O’Brien family ruled the area for almost 900 years.

Unfortunately, the chateau experienced some turbulence as soon as the English settlers arrived. The castle was seen by the English as a stronghold to be taken, and conflicts and wars of power ensued… without the O’Briens ever relinquishing their castle.

By the 17th century, however, the château was a ruin. It was then agreed to rebuild the building… before tearing it down again and building it in the 19th century!

Today, the building is in Gothic style. It was renovated in 1962 and turned into a luxury hotel. And let’s face it: inside, the atmosphere is one of luxury and comfort!

Spacious rooms, attentive staff, a cosy restaurant run by a famous chef… not to mention the vast surrounding estate, with golf course, forest park and walking trails!

In short: you can’t visit the establishment like that… unless you’re a hotel guest… But it’s well worth the detour: an unforgettable stay in magnificent surroundings!
