Dunmore Cave is just 10km from Kilkenny town, and can be visited in its entirety. A succession of rocky chambers and cavities plunged into darkness, barely pierced by a few spotlights, will allow you to admire the beauty of this 350-million-year-old geological formation!
A visit to Dunmore Cave begins at the Visitor Center, where an exhibition presents the history of the cave, from the origins of its geological formation to its discovery by man in the 8th century.
According to ancient writings, the Grotto was first mentioned in the “Annales”, which describe a Viking massacre that took place in the Grotto around 928. Some Viking archaeological remains were even discovered many centuries later, proving this theory.
In addition to the exhibition presenting the history of Dunmore cave, the Visitor Centre also offers an exhibition based on 3 other themes:
A visit to the cave will plunge you into an exceptional world, where a guide will be delighted to show you all the subtleties of the cave, starting with the gigantic calcite formations found everywhere. Although photography within the cave is forbidden, you won’t be outdone when you visit: Dunmore cave is one of the most beautiful caves in the whole of Ireland, and is steeped in fascinating history.
Allow around an hour for the visit. We recommend you bring a sweater for the visit: it’s pretty chilly down there!
