Fair Head(An Bhinn Mhór in Irish Gaelic) is a stunning cliff located to the east of the town of Balllycastle (Co. Antrim) in Northern Ireland. At 5 kilometers long and 196 meters high, it’s very different from the usual Irish cliffs. It’s made up of vertical strata of dolerite rock, forming a striated, fissured, “organ-pipe” wall. Rather hostile, it’s a favorite climbing spot for sportsmen and women… and was even used as a filming location for the HBO series Game of Thrones!

It’s impossible to visit Ballycastle without following the famous Torr Head Scenic Road! This winding coastal road follows the edge of the ocean until it reaches Fair Head.
The perfect opportunity for any traveller to admire one of Northern Ireland’s most impressive cliffs!
There are many vantage points from which to admire it. Simply park your car in specially designated areas, and off you go! An incredible panorama awaits you! And let’s face it: this cliff is one of the most beautiful spots in the region.
Fair Head is a sort of rocky cape, made up of vertical strata of stone. Although the seafront is devoid of grass, its plateau conceals a real wild treasure: 2 magnificent Northern Irish lakes, overgrown with soft green vegetation!
A unique show!
Of course, you can also visit the cliff itself. It has to be said that Fair Head is considered THE must-see climbing spot, essentially reserved for seasoned climbers. The site is certainly difficult to access: the climbing techniques to be deployed require mastery and a high level of skill, and can sometimes be atypical of traditional cliffs. So don’t hesitate to get in touch with a local mountaineering club: some guides will offer to accompany you on the climb… But beware: an excellent level is required!
If you’re not too keen on climbing, it’s also possible to discover the area by simply walking around. In fact, it’s possible to hike around the plateau, accessing it from the rear. You don’t need to be a high-level hiker, but you do need good walking shoes, a backpack, something to eat and drink, a windbreaker and, above all… an effective midge repellent! This voracious mosquito haunts the Fair Head plateau and could turn your hike into a nightmare. (Beware, they’re particularly fond of travellers!)
Once on the plateau, the view is exceptional. Nature is omnipresent, and you can enjoy sumptuous views of the surrounding area. Don’t miss the beauty of the two hidden lakes, the surrounding moorland and the breathtaking ocean views. You may even be lucky enough to come across a few wild goats and sheep that have made Fair Head their home!
It’s like being alone in the world, in symbiosis with wild nature, rock and raging water.
Note that the landscape is extremely changeable: especially as the day, weather and light change. However, prefer clear weather, with as little wind as possible. You’ll be able to enjoy a clear view from miles away!
But beware: the cliff is particularly windy, and there are no railings. The area is wild, with as little trace of human intervention as possible. Don’t venture too close to the edge: it’s a vertiginous precipice, and accidents have unfortunately already happened (especially when taking selfies).
