Fanning’s Castle, an ancient medieval tower house, stands on King’s Island in Limerick’s historic center. Located on Mary Street, it is one of Limerick’s must-see tourist attractions. It’s the town’s last tower house, and although it’s in ruins, it attracts many visitors every day!
Let’s face it: Fanning’s Castle is nothing special, and can be rather disappointing all in all. It has to be said that its ruins are without charm.
However, the site is of little historical or cultural interest. The building was erected in 1641 on behalf of Dominic Fanning, then former mayor of Limerick. At the time, it was 5 storeys high, with limestone block walls. Windows on each floor were sometimes mullioned, sometimes lancet-shaped, overlooking Mary Street.
Overall, the building was a fine example of local medieval architecture.
Today, Fanning’s Castle is in a sorry state: you can only admire it from the street, as a visit through its ruins could prove dangerous…
