Fort Dunree Military Museum (An Dun Riabhach in Irish Gaelic) is a Napoleonic military fort built on the edge of the Inishowen Peninsula. Overlooking the ocean, it was built by the Royal Navy on a rocky outcrop, and was a strategic point in the defense of the Irish coast… Today, the fort has been converted into a museum, making it a fun place to visit!
In a fabulous setting, you can discover the history of Fort Dunree, an impressive military construction equipped with heavy artillery and a formidable firearms battery. Renovated in the 1800s, the fort has been impeccably restored, allowing you to discover the subtleties of military defense at the time.
You can also browse an interesting exhibition on the fort’s history, and admire the period cannons and the military camp where the soldiers lived.
Don’t hesitate to enjoy the view: many seabirds will fly overhead, and the scenery around Dunree Bay is splendid! The museum also features a second exhibition, this time dedicated to the ecosystem of the Inishowen Peninsula: you’ll know all about the local flora and marine species that live here!
The fort also boasts a souvenir store, an auditorium, a coffee-shop and several walking trails.
