A fully restored 15th century château

The first stones of the castle were laid in 1468 on behalf of the Irish clan Mac Conmara (or MacNamara), who ruled the region at the time.

The castle was nevertheless confiscated by Arthur Smith, who managed to seize the building during Cromwell’s Conquests of Ireland (1649-1653). He occupied the château from 1659 until 1661, when it was finally returned to the Mac Conmara family.

However, the château was sold in 1800 and passed through the hands of several owners, including the Dunboyne family, who undertook extensive restoration work.

During the War of Independence (1919-1921), Knappogue Castle served as headquarters for Michael Brennan, commander of County Clare’s Eastern Brigade.

Today, the castle belongs to the state and is used for guided tours, medieval banquets and weddings. Don’t hesitate to visit the 5000m² garden. As for the interior, the guided tour will take you through the main rooms of Knappogue Castle, including the living room, bedrooms and library. The setting is magnificent, and the period furniture quite exceptional!

For the record, an Irish whiskey called Knappogue Castle is produced in Northern Ireland by the Bushmills distillery. It refers directly to the County Clare castle…
