Don’t be fooled by the building’s name: Lynch’s Castle doesn’t really have the attributes of a castle… However, this Gothic building in Galway city center was owned by a prominent Galway family in the 15th century before being converted into a hotel. Today, the castle is occupied by an Irish bank. A very old building that blends in perfectly with the modern buildings in the area! Although it’s not a must-see, don’t hesitate to stop in front of it!
Lynch’s Castle is located at the junction of Shop Street and Abbey Gate Street Upper. It was once owned by the largest family in the region: the Lynches, an influential family who played an active role in Galway’s economy in the Middle Ages. In 1930, it was bought by Allied Irish Banks, who restored it from top to bottom.
The château has 4 storeys, and was extended in 1808, along with a number of other notable improvements. Although you can only visit the first floor, the front facade features a framed panel displaying the arms of King Henry VII, King of England from 1484 to 1509, and the Lynch family coat of arms. On the other side, you can also make out the coat of arms of the Earl of Kildare, famous for having liberated Galway at the Battle of Knockdoe in 1504.
And don’t miss the many gargoyles that mark the building’s profoundly Gothic style! It’s a rarity around here!
An attractive building, but not one of the city’s must-see attractions…
