If you love family-run establishments and extraordinary spirits, then we invite you to visit Micil Distillery in Galway! This Irish distillery has been in operation for over 170 years and has a special love for the art of distillation and respect for tradition! Whiskey, gin, poitín: not a single spirit escapes his excellence! A distillery not to be missed during your visit to Galway!
At Micil Distillery, whiskey is above all a family passion. The distillery has been in existence for nearly 170 years, and has been handed down through 6 successive generations!
The distillery was named after the family’s great-great-great-grandfather, Micil Mac Chearra. He is said to have started distilling poitín as early as 1848 on a hill in Connemara… and the success has grown over the years!
And so the establishment still runs today, producing remarkable spirits made from family recipes, artisanal knowledge and age-old techniques… all largely inspired by the purest ingredients available in Connemara!
And let’s face it: their spirits catalog is pretty rich! The distillery produces not only whisky, but also gin (very trendy at the moment!), whiskey liqueur and Poitín. Their beverages are of the highest quality and aromatic finesse, and promise a true taste journey to Ireland.
Guided tours of the distillery are also available. The program includes a tour of their stills, explanations of their ancestral manufacturing processes… and tastings of some of their finest beverages (in moderation, as always!). You’ll learn that family production is above all the result of illegal activities. A fascinating tale, punctuated by colorful historical anecdotes!
3 separate tours are available:
The guides are friendly, passionate and full of humor. They’ll give you a detailed explanation of Micil Distillery’s production process, and will be happy to answer any questions you may have. It’s a great way to discover the soul of an artisan distillery with a passion for its craft!
