In terms of must-sees in Drogheda, our top recommendation is Millmount Fort, a large tower built on a promontory overlooking the rest of the town. Before that time, a castle to protect Drogheda from its attackers stood on this site… A must-see!
Millmount Fort is said to have seen the siege of the Cromwellian conquest, and was destroyed a century later, giving way to the construction of the tower we know today. (Built in 1714). Cylindrical in shape, the tower has 2 storeys and is covered by a conical roof.
It was nevertheless damaged by the Irish Civil War of 1922, and had to endure heavy bombardment and cannon fire that damaged the building’s defensive walls. The tower was nevertheless restored, and has now been converted into a museum. It has since been opened to visitors.
You’ll discover an interesting exhibition tracing the fort’s history, and enjoy a breathtaking view over the town of Drogheda. The site has a nice cachet, and has been quite well converted into a museum. A must-see if you want to discover Irish history, and learn more about Drogheda!
