Visit Mount Usher Gardens

A garden dating back to 1868 near Glendalough!

Mount Usher Gardens - Ben Crowe - cc

Mount Usher Gardens were created by Edward Walpole in 1868. Magnificent, they cover around 8 hectares of forest, waterfalls, exotic plants and beautifully wooded areas. Numerous footpaths allow you to stroll to your heart’s content.

Here you can admire numerous species of tropical trees and plants. It has to be said that the gardens enjoy a humid climate ideal for their proliferation: in addition, the Vartry River runs through the site, winding its way through the gardens.

So expect a wide range of species, from Montezuma pines and Chilean fire trees to palms and other tropical plants from Mexico, the Caribbean and other exotic countries. Several thousand protected species can be found here.

Note that the gardens are equipped with several stores to mark out your walk. You can also enjoy a coffee at the Avoca Garden Café, a muffin at the Bakery, a souvenir photo store (ideal for taking home with the family), an ice-cream stand, a clothing store and a small botanical greenhouse offering a wide range of plants for sale.
