The highest mountain in the range is Slieve Donard.
At a height of 849 metres, it is particularly popular with walkers, cyclists and climbers.
There are a number of routes to the summit, not all of which require excellent walking ability.
For an overview of Mourne Montains as a whole, we particularly recommend the famous Wall Mourne. It’s a dry-stone wall that runs for 35 km through the Mourne Mountains.
Admittedly, it’s not possible to cover it from end to end in a single day, and you’ll need good equipment and a good level of fitness, but the spectacle is well worth the detour! The latter offers marvellous views of the region, and will leave you speechless at the beauty of its panoramas! (Don’t forget your camera!)
At the same time, you can observe exceptional flora and fauna. You’ll find up to 3 different species of heather(Erica tetralix, Erican cinerea, and Calluna vulgaris), specimens of particularly colorful bellflowers(Campanula rotundifolia), and many other beautiful plants.
Did you know? The mountains of Mourne are said to have been a profound source of inspiration for writer C.S. Lewis, when he penned “The World of Narnia”. The Belfast-born writer is said to have been struck by the majestic beauty of these mountains from an early age…
He drew direct inspiration from it to describe his Fantastic World, believing that the Mourne Mountains were perfectly capable of concealing a giant of mythical proportions!
