Slieve Donard is a mountain in the Mourne Mountains, County Down. At 849 metres, it is the highest peak in the mountain range! An ideal place for hikers!
Slieve Donard is the highest mountain in Northern Ireland. Its name, Slieve Donard, derives from the Irish Gaelic Sliabh Domengard meaning “Mountain of Donard”. The latter was a disciple of Saint Patrick, and was himself the patron saint of the town of Maghera.
Located less than 3km from the sea, its summit offers impressive views of the Irish Sea, Newcastle and the city of Belfast in the distance.
Despite its high altitude, the mountain is accessible to walkers of all levels. Allow around 3h30 for the ascent, and don’t forget to bring the essentials for this hike (warm clothing, rain gear, water and food). The difference in altitude is sometimes considerable, and requires stamina and good physical condition.
Along the way, you’ll recognize the Wall of Mourne, a man-made drystone wall that runs through the entire Mourne Mountains massif.
A breathtaking show!
