Moyne Abbey is without doubt one of the most impressive ecclesiastical ruins in County Mayo. In remarkable condition, the site is an ultra-tourist attraction, attracting large numbers of visitors every year to admire its Gothic architecture and medieval charm!
The abbey was built north of the village of Ballina in 1462. Built by the Burke family, the Franciscan monastery is typically Gothic in style, with its main tower, sharp pediments and pointed ogives. Magnificent, the site is impressive and imposing in its size and still remarkable condition.
Here, you don’t have to stretch your imagination too far to imagine the original state of Moyne Abbey! The site comprises a church, residential buildings and a central cloister. It’s worth noting that you can go inside, provided you’re careful (the ruins are fragile and sometimes unpredictable!). So be careful not to rub the walls with your backpacks, or lean against the building.
In any case, the architecture is of great beauty, and you’ll be able to admire countless stones carved and engraved with interlacing designs. An exceptional building, which has retained its appeal despite the terrible fire of 1590, perpetrated by Richard Bingham!
