Embark on a wild escapade at Mulranny Salt Marsh, one of County Mayo's little-known treasures!

Mulranny Salt Marsh is located in County Mayo, on the west coast of Ireland, not far from the charming village of Mulranny and Clew Bay. This marshy area, shaped by the tides and the salty Atlantic air, offers an exceptional panorama of sand dunes, fat grass and endemic flora. Nature lovers will particularly appreciate the biodiversity here: from seabirds and plant species typical of brackish environments to the small fish that thrive in the brackish water, wildlife flourishes in total freedom.

The Mulranny Salt Marsh is often considered a valuable ecosystem, protected under Natura 2000 sites or other Irish conservation programs. These salt marshes are formed when a mixture of fresh and salt water floods the coastal lowlands, creating an ideal habitat for numerous plant and animal species, some of which are highly sensitive to human pressure. On site, you can admire the characteristic marsh flora: saltwort, seagrass and red fescue, which give the area a rugged yet delicate appearance.

Walks and hikes

Mulranny is also the starting point for superb coastal walks and cycling tours. The Great Western Greenway, for example, passes close by and allows you to admire the wild landscapes of County Mayo. Along the way, views of the bay, mountain backdrops and expanses of marshland provide a striking contrast. For those who want to recharge their batteries, the peace and quiet of the Salt Marsh is perfect: there’s no need to travel long distances to enjoy a beautiful stopover and watch migratory birds in the distance.

Activities nearby

Nearby, the village of Mulranny offers a number of cosy pubs and cafés for a gourmet break. The surrounding beaches, with their often golden sands and clear waters, invite you to relax or even take a dip on sunny days (rare, admittedly, but all the more appreciated in Ireland!). Fishing enthusiasts can cast their lines in the waters of the bay, while photographers will find it an ideal playground for capturing the changing light of the Atlantic coastline.
