Blessington Reservoir has a history closely linked to Ireland’s economic and energy development. Its origins can be traced back to the 1930s and 1940s, a period when Ireland wanted both to increase its electricity production and better manage its drinking water reserves. The Poulaphouca site on the River Liffey was identified as an ideal location for a hydroelectric dam. The construction of the Poulaphouca dam (and hence the creation of the reservoir) was overseen by the Electricity Supply Board (ESB), the body responsible for the electrification of the country.

Work began around 1937 and spread over several years, sometimes interrupted by the difficulties of the Second World War. By flooding the surrounding land, the new reservoir swallowed up farms, houses and even some roads, forcing the displacement of several local families. Despite this upheaval, the project was considered essential at the time to strengthen Dublin’s drinking water supply and the region’s electricity supply. Alongside its utilitarian role, Blessington Reservoir quickly became a tourist attraction. From the 1950s-1960s, trout and pike fishing began to be practiced here, as well as water sports such as sailing.

The surrounding countryside, between the Wicklow hills and mountains, attracted many walkers who came to enjoy the natural setting and charm of the Irish countryside. Today, the history of Blessington Reservoir is still very much alive in local anecdotes: some locals still evoke memories of submerged buildings, while walkers can spot the remains of old stone walls during exceptional drought conditions.
