Roe & Co Irish Whiskey Distillery is a historic Dublin distillery. Once the market leader in Great Britain and Ireland, it closed its doors in 1926… But that was without counting on the support of the Diageo group, which has decided to reopen its doors in 2019. The latest addition to the Diageo family, the distillery has relaunched its business and set up shop on James Street in the Liberties district. The distillery is already offering a full tour of its premises to the public. A fascinating tour awaits you!

A former distillery reopens, boosted by the Diageo group

It’s no coincidence that Roe & Co Irish Whiskey Distillery has chosen to locate in Dublin’s Liberties district. The area is renowned for being part of Dublin’s famous“Golden Triangle” (an area of the city with a high concentration of beer brewers and whiskey producers, including Guinness, Teeling, Pearse, etc.).

To underline its position as a key player, the establishment, with the help of the Diageo group (which owns Guinness), has chosen to set up shop in the former water treatment plant of the historic Guinness brewery: an emblematic monument of the city, located just 2 steps from the former site of the resurrected distillery!

The Roe & Co distillery opens its doors to you in a building combining classic art deco and modern design. The Diageo group has invested considerable resources in this project: over 25 million euros have been spent on refurbishing the premises.

And it shows! The tour is simply brilliant, immersive and powerful. It’s a great way to discover how Irish whiskey is distilled, from its original production to its final blending, maturation and tasting.

The visit is highly instructive, taking you to the heart of a know-how that combines ancestral methods and modern processes. There’s a lot to learn here, and the distillery even goes so far as to offer a small practical workshop, dedicated to the subtle art of mastering aromas. A fascinating subject to better understand how tastes can be worked!

Finally, if you like, the tour ends with a visit to the Power House Bar, located in the distillery itself. A bit like the Gravity Bar at the Guinness Storehouse, this is a place where you can relax and, if you wish (and in moderation), order one of the distillery’s products.
