Rosserk Friary is a Franciscan monastery north of Ballina in County Mayo, Ireland. Founded in 1440 by the Circa family, the building is one of the best-preserved monasteries in the country. With its magnificent architecture and sculpted facades, Rosserk Friary is a must-see!
Rosserk Monastery is located north of the village of Ballina, on the west coast of Killala Bay.
Next to the monastery stands the convent of Moyne, created shortly after Rosserk Friary. These 2 buildings can be visited, and are remarkably well preserved despite the fire perpetrated by Sir Richard Bingham in 1590, following the reformist context of the time (Elizabeth I wished to establish Protestantism in Ireland).
Fortunately, both the monastery and the convent have withstood fire and the ravages of time. Here you can admire the monastery’s church door: massive and made of finely engraved stone blocks. Gothic in style, the monastery boasts a superb nave, 2 chapels and a bell tower. As for the convent, you can visit 3 vaulted rooms, as well as the dormitory, the former refectory where the monks ate, and the kitchen.
It’s a magnificent place, full of authentic charm. A very nice visit!
