Visit Shane’s Castle

A castle built in 1345!

Shane’s Castle was built in the 14th century on the shores of Lough Neagh. Raised by the O’Neill family, he was initially known as the “Eden-Duff-Carrick”. It wasn’t until 1722 that the castle was renamed “Shane’s Castle” by its owner, Shane O’Neill MacBrien.

Featuring turrets and defensive walls, its current state is explained by a terrible fire in 1816. At the time, numerous improvements had been undertaken, including the creation of a terrace in 1800. Unfortunately, all this was destroyed, and the château left to rot.

Today, the site is closed to visitors.
