The Sheep and Wool Heritage Centre is a museum entirely dedicated to one of Ireland’s greatest mascots: the sheep! Here, we invite you to discover the intricacies of this unique animal, from its breeding to the wool industry. It’s a great museum to visit with the whole family, and you’ll learn a lot about this endearing animal!
Discover the history of sheep farming in Connemara, and everything you need to know about wool production! Weaving, spinning, ancestral practices… You’ll learn all you need to know on the subject, and even have the chance to listen to audio interviews in which Irish people talk about the various woollen trades practiced in the last century.
And don’t miss their original slide shows, which allow children to project themselves and discover what their role would have been in the 1900s.
You can also meet a sheep and admire the art of hand-shearing by a local farmer (only available in summer between July and August). There’s also a small store where you can take home a souvenir. On the program: scarves, sweaters, hats… All in wool, of course! Even if the prices are a little high, the quality is there: you’ll have a pure Connemara wool souvenir!
