Silent Valley is a pretty valley in Ireland, located in the Mourne Mountains, County Down. Renowned for its exceptional, 100% wild landscapes, the valley also boasts one of the region’s largest water reservoirs. A reservoir set in unspoilt surroundings with a delightful panoramic view!
Surrounded by magnificent, rugged mountains, Silent Valley is set in an area of outstanding natural beauty. A few houses live in a secluded setting on the edge of the forest and lake, in a haven of peace and tranquillity. It’s a corner of Ireland that’s particularly popular with the Irish!
Every year, over 50,000 people come here to enjoy the peace and quiet of the valley, and its particularly rich flora and fauna.
Beyond these beauties, Silent Valley is home to a water reservoir that supplies County Down, the surrounding counties and the city of Belfast.
It is owned and managed by Northern Ireland Water, and was built between 1923 and 1933 by over a thousand men, nine of whom died during construction.
A winding road runs along the entire length of the reservoir, offering breathtaking views! Of course, you’ll have to pay for this route, but it’s sure to please both your eyes and your camera!
The reservoir boasts a superb dam, from which you can admire an unrivalled view of the valley. It has to be said that the reservoir was built with the utmost respect for its environment, and blends in perfectly with the valley’s wild landscapes!
