History of Slemish Mountain

Mountain where Saint Patrick is said to have been held in bondage

History tells us that Slemish Mountain was the place where Saint Patrick, the patron saint of the Irish, lived for many years. He would have been held in slavery there, spending several years of his life tending sheep for important Irish clan chiefs in the 5th century.

It was on this mountain that the Saint finally found God, and was entrusted with the mission of evangelizing Ireland… A mission he completed at the end of the 5th century.

The volcano is also said to have been the meeting place of the United Irishmen in the 17th century. It was a nationalist republican movement.

A breathtaking panorama

Slemish Mountain is generally very popular with hikers. Allow at least 1h30 for the outward journey. The mountain is rugged and steep, so even the most fragile calves are likely to have a hard time of it!

However, reaching the summit will reward all your efforts, offering a sumptuous view of the surrounding area, with a breathtaking panorama of a peat bog on the mountain’s eastern front, and grassy expanses stretching as far as the eye can see… The area is magnificent, and so wild that the mountain is reputed to be home to a fragile ecosystem, with a particularly rare flora and fauna.
