Visiter Teeling Whiskey Distillery.

A historic, family-run distillery, which made its debut in 1782... before being reopened by the same family in 2011!

Teeling Whiskey Distillery is a historic Dublin distillery based in the Liberties district. However, this establishment, founded in 1782, has had a turbulent past and had to close its doors in 1923 after more than 140 years of activity and excellence in whisky production…

But Jack and Stephen Teeling, two brothers who decided to pay homage to their ancestors who founded the distillery, reopened the distillery in 2012!

History of Teeling Whiskey Distillery

Teeling whiskey: above all, a family affair!

Teeling Whiskey Distillery

The distillery’s history began in 1782, when Walter Teeling decided to set up a small craft distillery in the Marrowbone Lane area of Dublin.

The establishment is located in the heart of the Liberties district, in what was then known as the “golden triangle” of distillers (at the time, the largest distilleries were already concentrated in this area).

When Walter Teeling opened his distillery, he had no idea that this decision was the first step in a family tradition that would stretch back over 240 years!

The small distillery soon went from strength to strength: the people of Dublin seemed to appreciate Teeling Whiskey, and the local Irish pubs bought it by the case: it was a success!

The distillery soon attracted the interest of major investors… and was eventually bought out by a neighboring distillery, William Jameson & Co.

Unfortunately, the Teeling distillery’s financial health failed in the 1920s, and it closed in 1923…

Time for a renaissance…

As the years go by, so do the generations of Teelings.

In 1987, John Teeling, a descendant of Walter Teeling, decided to set up a new distillery in Cooley, County Louth, in former warehouses formerly used to distill industrial alcohol from potatoes.

He renovated the premises and named the establishment the“Cooley Distillery“. He then organized the production of 100% Irish whiskey and started distilling in 1989…

But all that changed in 2011, when John Teeling’s two sons, Jack and Stephen, who had gained extensive experience at Cooley Distillery (which had since been sold to investors), decided to resurrect Teeling Distillery, buying warehouses in Dublin’s Newmarket Square, a stone’s throw from the original 1782 distillery!

Their concept is clear: the siblings want to revive the whiskey of their ancestor Water Teeling, while developing a solid range of single malts. They surround themselves with the best specialists and draw their inspiration from Irish tradition, while at the same time reconnecting with today’s modern world.

The result is whiskeys that are both powerful and subtle. Flavors of assertive character, with strength and sweetness constantly on the edge. Lightly peated, they are stored in barrels that once held rum, cherry, port, Kentucky bourbon or wine… A choice that adds an extra touch of originality to the beverages produced!
