The Annie Moore statue (or Annie Moore Monument) is a sculpture located in Cobh, County Cork. It commemorates Irish immigration to the United States, paying tribute to Annie Moore (1874-1924), who was the first Irish immigrant to pass through Ellis Island on January 1, 1892.
The Cobh statue represents Annie Moore, who was the first immigrant to reach New York via Ellis Island. Depicted with 2 children (her brothers) pointing to the horizon, she symbolizes all the hope and history of the former immigrants who left Ireland for America, following the Great Famine and the harsh conditions of the time.
At the age of 18, she decided to join her family, who had left 4 years earlier for the New World. On her arrival, she was greeted by officials and her family.
She lived happily on the Lower East Side, married a baker and had 11 children before dying of a heart attack. Her success in the New World gave the town of Cobh the idea of commemorating her passage with a lovely bronze statue called the “Annie Moore Monument”, located near the harbor on the quayside. Very realistic, it’s easy to access and free of charge.
A second statue is also on display at the Ellis Island Museum.
