Visiter The Ardgroom SW.

Ardgroom SW (also known as Canfea) is a prehistoric ringstone on the Beara peninsula in County Cork. Magnificent, it’s set in an exceptional natural setting, in open fields, and offers a nice view of the surrounding area and the town of Ardgroom.

A stone circle in a 100% wilderness setting

Ardgroom SW consists of 11 megaliths in a circle. Today, 9 are still standing, while one stone lies outside the circle.

According to researchers, the site dates back to the Neolithic period, and was later used by the Celts as a ritual site. Numerous prehistoric and Celtic remains have been found here.

The stones are imposing, stretching lengthwise. Little eroded by time, they have retained their position, and have not been restored or moved since.

The corner is rather windy, but its slightly overhanging position meant that, at the time, it had an unobstructed view of the surrounding area.

The circle measures less than 10 metres in diameter, but is one of the largest stone circles on the Beara Peninsula. Note, however, that the circle described is a little squat and irregular in places.

Ardgroom SW is open to the general public, provided they don’t touch the stones. Don’t hesitate to take a walk in the surrounding area: the site offers lovely views over the village of Ardgroom, its green meadows and Glenbeg Lough.
