Dún Eochla is a prehistoric fort dating back to the Iron Age. Located on Inishmore Island in County Galway, it is open to visitors and offers exceptional views of the cliffs and ocean.
The Dún Eochla is a circular fort (also known as a ringfort in English), consisting of several enclosures and successive walls. These walls extend over a large area, criss-crossing the site and making the fort its focal point.
Formed from dry stone, the Dún Eochla is open to visitors (it’s free to visit), and allows you to plunge into the heart of a still-preserved prehistoric heritage. It has to be said that the quality of the construction is remarkable, and has stood up brilliantly to the centuries without moving too much.
Today’s remains will give you a good idea of what the Ringfort looked like in Iron Age times.
Don’t forget to take in the exceptional view of the ocean and surrounding valleys: the fort is high enough to admire the panorama!
The only drawback is that the site has no explanatory panels to explain the fort’s historical context. A pity, but the beauty of the fort makes up for it!
