A garden to remember the Irish battles…

The Garden of Remembrance was designed by architect Dáithí Hanly and inaugurated in 1966 by President Éamon de Valera on the fiftieth anniversary of the 1916 uprising.

The garden celebrates Ireland’s past, commemorating the victims of the various battles that brought Ireland to its current geopolitical status. His battles include :

  • the revolts of 1798 and 1803,
  • the Irish youth revolt,
  • the Fenian uprising in the 1860s
  • and the 1916 Easter Rising in Dublin.

Only the Irish Civil War is not honored here, for controversial reasons.

The garden is rather imposing, featuring a neo-classical cross with pediments and a rectangular pool. An imposing statue by Oisin Kelly, entitled “The Children of Lir”, stands at the far end of the basin, adding to the solemnity of the setting.

The area is pleasant and well worth a walk. It is one of the official places where great political figures such as Queen Elizabeth II have paid their respects.
