Want to hike through Ballycroy National Park? The Letterkeen Loop Trail Head is a 12 km loop that takes in some of the park’s most beautiful scenery! The circuit, accessible to medium-level walkers, is a great opportunity to get away from it all and reconnect with nature.
The 3-hour Letterkeen Loop Trail Head starts at the Brogan Carroll Bothy, and is a 12km loop.
It runs in a clockwise direction, with ascents and descents, some of them steep. The highest point is 311 metres, and you’ll have to cross a pass belonging to the Nephin Beg mountains.
To do this trail, you’ll need to follow a signposted route (purple arrows), which takes you along an old cattle track, a narrow path through the trees, a sandy road, a forest track and the bank of a forest-lined river.
Picturesque, it’s a quiet, secluded walk with lovely views over the wilds of Ballycroy Park.
Above all, go equipped with the right gear: hiking boots, backpack, windbreaker, sweater, water and food are a minimum. The circuit is suitable for most levels of walker: you may need a little stamina for the ascents and descents, but it’s all quite manageable if you’re used to hiking for several hours at a time.
It’s best to go in good weather, when the sky is clear. The panoramas will be all the more beautiful!
