Michael Collins House, located in Clonakilty (Co. Cork), is a museum entirely dedicated to a local and national hero: Michael Collins. Known as a leading figure in the fight for Irish independence at the beginning of the 20th century, the village where he was born has dedicated a museum to him! And the latter is well worth the effort: above all, it’s an opportunity to learn more about Irish history, its quest for emancipation in the face of British oppression… and, of course, Collins’ major role in this quest! In short, you’ll know everything there is to know about the great episodes of Irish revolutionary history!

The museum is primarily dedicated to Michael Collins, but also focuses on the country’s great historical episodes, as well as the other great revolutionaries who fought for Irish independence.
Here, you’ll learn all about Collins, from his childhood to his fight against English forces, his role in the Easter Rising of 1916, and his decision to sign the Treaty of London (a choice that was as much decried as it was acclaimed, since it allowed the Republic of Ireland to become independent… to the detriment of Northern Ireland).
You’ll also learn how this national hero died in a tragic ambush.
But that’s not all: you’ll also discover portraits of other Clonakilty revolutionaries, such as Tadhg an Asna, who led the local forces into battle in 1798. You’ll also discover the fate of Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa, a Fenian famous for his fighting and for having highly influenced Michael Collins later on.
The museum is presented in an accessible way through guided tours (available in French), interactive exhibits, videos with archival images, objects that belonged to Collins…etc.
The museum is quite pleasant, well documented, and passionately tells the story of men who sacrificed everything for Ireland. A very interesting establishment, which will give you the maps to better understand the identity of today’s Ireland. A big plus: admission is pretty cheap, and you can book it online to avoid the queue!
Finally, you should know that the museum has long been wrongly considered to be the former home of Michael Collins. We now know that this is not true: although he did live here in Clonakilty, no one can today determine with any certainty exactly which house he lived in…
