The Country Life Museum is an impressive museum in the village of Turlough in County Mayo. Owned by the Dublin-based National Museum of Ireland, this museum presents the rural lifestyle of the Irish between 1850 and 1950. Some really interesting exhibitions!
The Country Life Museum is housed in a chic, ultra-modern building. A must-see with its white facade pierced by designer windows, the building houses an important collection of everyday objects used by the Irish peasantry between 1850 and 1950.
The museum offers you the chance to discover over a century of agricultural history, marked by craftsmanship, working the land, and the beginnings of modern farming machinery. The museum itself is very well designed, alternating exhibits, period objects and video documentaries. You’ll learn all about the trades of the land, the exploitation of water, and the different communities that helped each other at the time.
The museum is located in the heart of Turlough Park House, an attractive park with an old Georgian house that used to be the home of the museum’s janitor. Nowadays, it’s the perfect place for a nature walk!
