The story of Jameson whiskey began in 1780, when John Jameson, a wealthy Dublin entrepreneur, decided to set up his own distillery. He decided to settle in Dublin itself, in Smithfield Village, a booming industrial district at the time.
Jameson whiskey soon gained a reputation throughout Dublin, and then the whole of Ireland, and became a benchmark whiskey, among the most widely consumed by the Irish. Such was its success that the Jameson brand expanded year on year, relocating production to other sites to better satisfy demand.
From 1780 to the present day, Jameson has established itself as the Irish whiskey par excellence, exporting millions of liters around the world every year. Due to its success, the distillery and brand were acquired by Irish Distillers, an Irish subsidiary of the Pernod-Ricard group.
Before heading home, be sure to admire the Jameson distillery building: it has only been partially restored, and much of its architecture still dates back to the 1780s, when John Jameson founded his distillery. The stonework used in the construction is still visible, as is the superb, imposing fireplace that overlooks the whole of Dublin.
As fun as it is rewarding, the Old Jameson Distillery will show you the different stages in the production of a typical Jameson whiskey. You’ll discover how Jameson whiskey goes from barley to the smoky beverage so popular in Ireland and elsewhere.
It all starts with a short film about John Jameson, the distillery’s founder. After a few minutes of this highly informative documentary, your guide will ask you to go upstairs, to discover the magnificent stills and life-size vats where the famous Jameson whiskey is distilled.
You’ll learn that the quality of the water used in production is of great importance to the taste of the final product. As is the indispensable triple distillation process, which distills the whiskey 3 times to obtain the flavors that are so characteristic of Irish whiskey.
The processes used in this exhibition are quite grandiose: the equipment on display comes from the first stills used by John Jameson when the distillery was founded. The many barrels stored throughout the building, together with the smells of barley, malt and alcohol, make this a place that immerses us in the atmosphere of a real distillery.
After the 45-minute tour, you’ll be invited to taste Jameson whiskey, and take part in a blind test to taste and identify up to 5 Irish whiskeys. A fun way to discover the subtleties of Irish whiskey!
Finally, don’t forget to round off your visit with a visit to the Jameson Chimney: this former distillery chimney has been converted into a tower with an elevator, allowing you to admire the beauty of Dublin! A superb view not to be missed!
