Redwood Castle is an Anglo-Norman fortress near Lorrha in County Tipperary. Built during the 13th century, and occupied by the Anglo-Normans until 1350 (before being taken over by the Irish), the castle is still almost intact. Its charm in the heart of the Irish countryside is sure to win you over!
Redwood Castle was extended and renovated several times, between 1350 and 1580. Built in pure Anglo-Norman style, it later combined architectural elements more common to the Irish style of the period. Over the course of its history, the castle has seen many sieges and battles between the Anglo-Normans and the Irish… It was not confiscated and burned by Oliver Cromwell until 1650.
Since then, the castle has remained in ruins, with only its fortified walls intact. You’ll be amazed at how thick they are! The building is magnificent, and brings a serious charm to the surrounding landscape.
Please note that the château is only open during the summer months: don’t hesitate to contact them before you visit. The guided tour costs €7 per person, and provides an opportunity to learn more about the history of the building and its fine architecture…
