Thomond Bridge is a landmark bridge in Limerick, Ireland. Built in 1836, it links Limerick with its historic city center: King Island, home to King John’s Castle and other interesting medieval buildings. The rather imposing bridge crosses the River Shannon and offers a lovely view of the city and its historic sites.

Thomond Bridge is one of Limerick’s landmarks.
Built of limestone, it features 7 arches, curved breakwaters and an ashlar parapet. Its imposing size adds to the town’s cachet.
Steel lampposts and flower basket supports were added in the 1990s to give it added charm.
Finally, the bridge is two-way, and open to motorized vehicles. It’s open 24/7. It boasts a view of the (often turbulent) Shannon, as well as King John’s Castle, one of the region’s most important buildings.
You’ll need to use it to visit Limerick Castle, St Mary’s Cathedral, the Limerick Museum and many other places of interest. King Island is one of the city’s most popular tourist spots, with its medieval streets, attractions and history-filled atmosphere! This is the oldest part of the city: a short tour is highly recommended.
