Turlough Church is a superb ruined church built in Ireland between the 10th and 13th centuries. In remarkable condition, it is open to the public and attracts thousands of visitors every year to admire its round tower!
The origins of this church are unclear, but the first buildings are thought to have been erected around 900, when Ireland had been fully evangelized since the 5th century.
Magnificent, the site is free, and lost in the middle of the Turlough village countryside. Here you’ll be able to make out a magnificent little church featuring an L-shaped building with a round tower. It still has its conical roof, and was used by the monks to protect their relics and illuminated manuscripts. Finally, a small, anarchic cemetery of Celtic gravestones and crosses adds to the romantic charm of the place.
Don’t hesitate to take a tour and enter the old halls: Turlough Church has kept its panache and its mysteries, and is very well preserved! A beautiful ecclesiastical building in the Turlough countryside!
