Don’t be fooled by the rather austere appearance of Windmill Lane Recording Studios. The massive, uncluttered building feels more like a bunker than a real recording studio.
Impossible to miss with its white facade and green moldings, the building is almost reminiscent of a barricaded Roman temple, with a tiny door in its center.
But the magic is all inside. After all, the studio has played host to some of the greatest artists of all time! And the list is dizzying! Among the greats are David Bowie, the Rolling Stones, Damien Rice, PJ Harvey, Van Morrison, Kodaline, Hozier, REM, The Scripts, Lady Gaga, Metallica, Rod Stewart, Depeche Mode, Christy Moore, Snow Patrol, U2, the Cranberries, Phil Lynott, Sinead O’Connor…and many more!
The line-up of world-class artists is said to have recorded some of their greatest hits! In fact, the studio alone is considered to be U2’s “home”, where they record the most emblematic tracks of their careers!
The studio has become an almost sacred institution in the eyes of music lovers!
The studio enjoys such an aura that it was recently decided to open its doors to visitors as well. Windmill Lane Recording Studios is now one of Dublin’s hottest tourist attractions, giving you the chance to discover the site’s musical heritage, the artists who have performed there, and the studio’s most interesting anecdotes!
A chance to look back over 40 years of musical history, understand the artists who have passed through it, and learn the ropes on how to record sound in the studio!
Add to this an unusual encounter with Cosmo, a strange ghost who is said to inhabit the premises, and you’ve got a visit that’s as exciting as it is amusing, fun and quirky, with a touch of Irish humor!
The tour ends with a store area, where you’ll discover entire shelves dedicated to the studio’s musical history. Merchandising, merchandising, merchandising! All in the colors of the studio, but also of the big stars who recorded here. Fans should be psychologically prepared to spend! There’s plenty to choose from, with items you’re sure to love (T-shirts, posters, vinyl and much more!).
Tickets can be booked online via the studio’s website: www.windmilllanerecording.com. Don’t hesitate to book in advance, as the venue is often a victim of its own success, and can’t accommodate everyone.
Another crucial piece of information: Windmill Lane Recording Studios is housed in a protected historic building… The building is spread over 3 floors and does not have the facilities required to accommodate people with reduced mobility.
